How to Build Your Own Potato Gun- Step By Step (Easy) Guide

Try making your potato gun if you want a fun and exciting DIY project. A potato gun is a device that uses compressed air or combustion to launch potatoes or other projectiles at high speeds.

They can be used for entertainment, education, or even self-defense. However, they can also be dangerous if not handled properly, so you should always follow safety precautions and local laws when building and using potato gun plans.

This blog post will show you how to build a primary potato gun using common materials and tools. You will need:

  • A 4-inch diameter PVC pipe, about 2 feet long
  • A 2-inch diameter PVC pipe, about 4 feet long
  • A PVC end cap for the 4-inch pipe
  • A PVC reducer coupling that fits the 4-inch and 2-inch pipes
  • A barbecue igniter or a piezoelectric sparker
  • A drill and a drill bit
  • PVC primer and cement
  • A hacksaw or a pipe cutter
  • A potato or another suitable projectile
  • An aerosol spray such as hairspray or deodorant

Potato Gun Plans Easy Steps:

Cut the 4-inch pipe to the desired length.

This will be the combustion chamber of your potato gun. The longer the room, the more fuel you can use and the more powerful your potato gun will be. However, it would help if you did not make it too long, as it will make your potato gun heavier and more complicated to handle. A good length is about 2 feet.

Cut the 2-inch pipe to the desired length.

This will be the barrel of your potato gun. The longer the barrel, the more accurate and stable your potato gun will be. However, it would help if you did not make it too long, as it will reduce the muzzle velocity and the range of your potato gun. A good length is about 4 feet.

Drill a hole in the center of the end cap.

The hole should be large enough to fit the wires of your igniter or sparker. You can use a drill bit that matches the size of the cables, or you can make the hole slightly larger and seal it with epoxy or silicone later.

Insert the wires of your igniter.

Ensure they are long enough to reach the inside of the combustion chamber. You can use electrical tape or wire nuts to secure them in place.

Apply PVC primer

Cement to the inside of the end cap and the outside of one end of the 4-inch pipe. Push them together and twist them slightly until they are firmly attached. This will create a sealed lot for your combustion chamber. Let the cement dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

  • Apply PVC primer and cement to the inside of the reducer coupling and the outside of the other end of the 4-inch pipe. Push them together and twist them slightly until they are firmly attached.
This will create a transition from the combustion chamber to the barrel. Let the cement dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

  • Apply PVC primer and cement to the inside of the other end of the reducer coupling and the outside of one end of the 2-inch pipe. Push them together and twist them slightly until they are firmly attached.
This will create the barrel of your potato gun. Let the cement dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

  • Your potato gun is now ready to use. To load it, insert a potato or suitable projectile into the barrel and push it down until it reaches the reducer coupling. You can use a wooden dowel or a broomstick to do this.
Ensure the projectile fits snugly in the barrel but not too tightly, as it might get stuck or cause excessive pressure. You can also carve or cut the shell to hold the barrel better.

  • To fire your potato gun, spray some aerosol fuel into the combustion chamber through the hole in the end cap. You can use hairspray, deodorant, or any other flammable spray.

Please do not use too much, as it might cause a backfire or an explosion. A good amount is about one or two seconds of spraying.

  • Screw the end cap back onto the combustion chamber, making sure it is tight and secure. Aim your potato gun in a safe direction and distance away from people, animals, and property. Press the button of your igniter or sparker to create a spark inside the combustion chamber.
This will ignite the fuel and create a rapid gas expansion, propelling the projectile out of the barrel at high speed. Enjoy the sound and sight of your potato gun in action!
